These rules apply to the Master of Clinical Education (Research) (MCE/R).
1.1 The Master of Clinical Education (Research) is a higher degree by research course comprising:
i. 18 units of advanced coursework topics (one-third of the course), and
ii. a time-based, supervised research project culminating in a thesis (two-thirds of the course).
1.2 The course enables its students to make a significant contribution to knowledge in the field of clinical education, and is designed to provide health professionals with the advanced knowledge and skills required to deliver clinical education in health service settings.
1.3 The course equips its graduates for careers in clinical teaching in the government and private health sectors.
2.1 To be accepted for enrolment in a Master of Clinical Education (Research) candidature, an applicant must:
i. have at least one of the following Australian qualifications, or an equivalent qualification as approved by the relevant authorised delegate:
ii. meet the English language requirements specified by the University, and
iii. satisfy the University that they are reasonably likely to be able to successfully complete the requirements of the award within the maximum duration.
2.2 Exceptions to 2.1 can be approved in accordance with the Higher Degrees by Research Policy.
3.1 The course aims to enable health professions to make a significant contribution to knowledge in the field of clinical education, and to lead clinical education research in a range of environments and systems.
4.1 Knowledge
Graduates of the course are expected to demonstrate specialised and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge relating to the theory and pedagogy, research and evidence, policy and practice of clinical education.

4.4 Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to apply for admission to a PhD.
5.1 For a student to qualify for the degree of Master of Clinical Education (Research), the student must pass the following topics: On a full-time equivalent basis*, the standard program of study is as follows (topics are listed at Rule 7.1):
Pass the following topics:
i. HLED9101 Symbiotic Clinical Education for the Health Professions 1 (4.5 units)
HLED9108 Research Skills in Clinical Education (4.5 units)
ii. Plus either
PHCA9502A: Qualitative Research Methods (4.5 units)* and
PHCA9502B: Qualitative Research Methods (4.5 units)*
Or
PHCA9511A: Social Statistics in Public Health (4.5 units)** and
PHCA9511B: Social Statistics in Public Health (4.5 units)**
And
iii. Receive a determination that the degree be awarded following thesis examination (HLED9114).
*Students intending to undertake a thesis primarily using qualitative methods should complete PHCA9502A and PHCA9502B
**Students intending to undertake a thesis primarily using quantitative methods should complete PHCA9511A and PHCA9511B
Full-time candidature is dependent on the availability of topics
5.2 For the time-based research project, the student will undertake a supervised research project, culminating in submission of a thesis.
6.1 For coursework topics, the award of a grade of Fail (F):
i. in the same topic more than once, or
ii. in more than one topic may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress and will be dealt with under the Review of Student Progress Policy.
6.2 Students may not enrol in the time-based research project until they have satisfactorily completed all required coursework topics (see Rule 7.1) and successfully complete an Interim pre-Confirmation of Candidature Milestone.
6.3 Progression in the time-based research project is governed by the Higher Degrees by Research Policy.
7.1 The submitted thesis must meet all requirements for presentation and lodgement specified in the Higher Degrees by Research Policy and must not contain:
i. material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma, or
ii. any material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made in the text of the thesis or in the notes.
8.1 Assessment of coursework topics will be in accordance with the Statement of Assessment Methods for each individual topic.
8.2 The thesis examination will assess whether the student has demonstrated the following:
i. an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in the field of clinical education
ii. a significant contribution to knowledge
iii. ability to an original investigation or testing of ideas
iv. competence in independent research or experimentation
v. a thorough understanding of the appropriate techniques in the field demonstrated both by their application and a thorough review of the literature
vi. critical use of source material, experimental results (where appropriate) and published works
vii. an appreciation of the relationship of the special theme to the wider field of knowledge or area of professional practice, and
viii. the capacity to present well-written work.
