Higher degree by research (HDR) students
Flinders University continues to closely monitor the national COVID-19 trajectory to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our community in South Australia, the Northern Territory and elsewhere.
Students are encouraged to stay home if they are unwell until all acute symptoms have cleared. Please discuss any study arrangements with your supervisor if required.
COVID-19 positive people must not enter or visit hospitals, Aboriginal healthcare, disability and aged care facilities, unless to seek care.
If you have concerns or need support, counselling is at hand. If you’re facing financial difficulty FUSA offers emergency support.
International Travel
From October 2022, International travel to destinations that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade deem as Level 1 and Level 2 can now be approved by the student's Principal Supervisor (or Associate Supervisor if the Principal is unavailable). Level 3 travel will still require Principal Supervisor, HDR Coordinator and VPED approval. Travel to Level 4 countries will also require the Vice-Chancellor approval (but are unlikely to be approved).
- Level 1 - Exercise normal safety precautions
- Level 2 - Exercise a high degree of caution
- Level 3 - Reconsider your need to travel
- Level 4 - Do not travel

- Discuss the proposal with your Principal Supervisor
- Download the relevant application forms:
- HDR International Travel Application for Level 1 and Level 2
- HDR International Travel Application for Level 3 and Level 4
- Covid-Safe Travel Plan (for all levels)
- Risk Assessment (Level 3 & level 4)
- Additional Flight Details (as required).
- Register your intent to travel and seek approval with the Office of Graduate Research, HDR Progression Team by email HDR.Progression@flinders.edu.au with the subject line: Student Name (Student ID): International Travel request.
- Submit your request to the relevant approver (based on DFAT level) and include the following:
- HDR International Travel Application & COVID-Safe Travel Plan and Risk Assessment
- Evidence of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccinations, if relevant for the country or countries of travel.
- Evidence from Principal Supervisor that the travel is essential for the success of the research and candidature.
- Evidence of completion of Confirmation of Candidature and have any required ethics approval(s) if travel is for data collection.
- When the travel has been approved, if the cost of air travel is being fully funded by the University, it is essential that all travel is booked through the University approved travel management company. If the air travel is not fully funded, you may book via your desired travel booking method.
- Once approved, flights booked and details provided to the HDR Progression Team, a Deed Poll COVID Release will be drafted and provided to the applicant. This Deed Poll requires a physical signature with a witness, then to be scanned and returned to the HDR Progression Team.

Interstate Travel
Students planning on travelling interstate need approval from their Principal Supervisor.
If the purpose of travel relates to a Field trip, approval is also required through FlinSafe.
If cost of air travel is being fully funded by the University, it is essential that all travel is booked through the University approved travel management company, in accordance with the University travel policy.
The Office of Graduate Research does not manage student domestic travel. All questions regarding the process need to be directed to your College Operations Team.
Student Travel Insurance
If you are a student enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate course, including Higher Degrees by Research, at Flinders University and are travelling within Australia or overseas for your studies, then you are eligible to access cover for your university travel, subject to University and policy terms, limitations and exclusions.
